The Arctic Fox seeks to commemorate the life of Sir Francis Leopold McClintock, an Irish Arctic explorer who embarked on a quest in pursuit of the ill-fated Franklin expedition.

During the nineteenth century, numerous expeditions ventured to the Arctic in search of a Northwest Passage. In 1845, Sir John Franklin disappeared with two ships and 127 men in search of this passage. Over the duration of 30 years, 40 expeditions would go to the Arctic in search of Franklin. However, one man far surpassed the success of his fellow explorers.
Sir Francis Leopold McClintock (1819 – 1907), born in Dundalk, was the leading Arctic explorer of the Victorian era. During the Voyage of the Fox (1857-59), he discovered debris and written records which stated the fate of Franklin and his men. Less commemorated, his revolutionary techniques in Arctic sledge travel and contributions to the natural sciences. The Arctic Fox will feature experts and specialists in the field of Arctic exploration including David Murphy, Nigel Monaghan and family member John McClintock who will seek to unravel the valiant life of Leopold.
